PROPOSED ‘SEASONAL’ CLOSURE OF THE MARKET PLACE

The Town Council has listened to the feedback received from both businesses and residents, to this proposal and has decided to
delay consideration of the scheme to close the Market Place.

This position will be reviewed again next year when the full programme of events has been finalised.
In the meantime, the Market Place will be closed for events throughout this Summer as usual.

The Council has a programme of events planned which include the use of the Market Place and Auction Shed between May and October and it is proposed that the Market Place be closed for a period of up to six months for a ‘Summer Season’ closure.

This would allow for all the events to take place over the summer months whilst in between events there would be the opportunity of having the area clear to continue and complete the repairs and improvement works already planned for the area.

Concerns have been raised about providing adequate access for the market traders on a Tuesday, and particularly for the Auction each week. However, it is envisaged that one half of the square will be open on a Tuesday only, for the market traders. It will also offer an alternative area for the stalls enabling the area around the Church and the Auction Shed to remain uncluttered.

Once the season is finished the square would be re-opened for parking again during the winter months, with only the Christmas events requiring a further temporary closure.

This matter is due to be considered / decided at the next council meeting on 12th June 2024.
